IIT Kanpur and Technopark@iitk together hosted a Special Interest Group Meet in Defence Technologies at IIT Kanpur on 4th February 2020. The one-day event showcased the ongoing R&D work in defence sector at IIT Kanpur and provided an open platform to industry and academia to exchange views on current & future trends, applications & industry expectations in defence. The participants were also given a tour of the some of the major research facilities at IIT Kanpur such as National Centre for Flexible Electronics, 4i Lab, C3i centre, Flight Lab and Robotics Lab. The participating industries included Bharat Electronics (BHEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Cyient Technologies, Wipro, Tata Advanced Systems, MKU, DRDO, Lockheed Martin, NASSCOM and others. The event was graced by many senior professionals from industry and govt. organizations such as Rtd. Air Vice Marshal Pranay Sinha (Advisor BEL) and Manoj Jain (GM, BEL); Prachi Gupta (VP, MKU); Ajay Srivastava (HAL-TAD, Kanpur); Kaushal Jadia (VP and Head of Avionics Global Delivery, Cyient); Prakash Sesha, (Lockheed Martin Fellow); Dr. GG Dutta (Director, JCBCAT).
Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Deputy Director, IIT Kanpur, in his welcome address, outlined the role of IITK as a knowledge partner in the Bundelkhand Defence Corridor project and invited the industry to collaborate with IITK to push for indigenous innovations in defence sector. Currently, 40+ defence related projects are ongoing in IIT Kanpur. Prof. Avinash Agarwal, Professor In-charge of Technopark@iitk, further provided insights into the functioning of Technopark@iitk that already is home to nine companies and invited industries to set up their R&D bases in Technopark@iitk and leverage the intellectual and infrastructural leadership of IIT Kanpur. As hinted during the meet, Bharat Electronics and MKU may soon have their R&D base in Technopark@iitk.
